<dc:content>
We're approaching the end of Doctor Who's first season on Disney+, and it looks like my bold prediction about Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor will come to pass. Of course, we still have to get through the two-part finale and, given the hints that showrunner Russell T. Davies is dropping ahead of the episode, I can't help but feel a little worried. So far, it's been teased that two unexpected characters will meet up, and it also sounds like a potentially upsetting development is on the horizon.

Russell T. Davies is responsible for some of Doctor Who's best episodes, and a quick look at those will show that he's not above crafting a sad ending. For that reason, my anxiety is spiking a bit over his small tease ahead of part one of the upcoming season finale, which could end on a low note.

Russell T. Davies Hinted At A Meeting Between Two Characters

Fans have been waiting to find out who Mrs. Flood is all season, and it looks like we could get some answers on that based on the still from "The Legend Of Ruby Sunday," which is in the EP's Instagram post. Check out the photo below, which shows the first shared scene between Doctor Who cast members Anita Dobson and Angela Wynter:

A post shared by Russell T Davies (@russelltdavies63)

A photo posted by on

Ruby's grandmother, Cherry Sunday, is bedridden, and we haven't seen her interact with Mrs. Flood at all this season, so why are they having a "showdown," as Russell T. Davies said? Cherry looks worried in the photo, which makes me think Mrs. Flood is secretly a villain as I've assumed for some time now. Of course, the EP is as good as anyone at misleading fans with his teases, so I'll reserve my judgment until the actual episode is available to stream with a Disney+ subscription.

The Caption In Russell T. Davies' Post Has Me Worried

The Queer as Folk scribe frequently teases upcoming episodes and often fairly cryptic. One of his most common tendencies is the use of emojis, typically pairing two hearts with another emoji. For those who didn't notice it in the post above, here's what he shared for "The Legend Of Ruby Sunday":

♥️♥️➕💀

Two hearts and a skull? That could mean anything, but the fact they are the same color has me thinking it's tied to The Doctor. Time Lords do have two hearts, after all, which makes the skull more concerning. Surely, he's not teasing that The Doctor will die, right?

That feels unlikely to me, especially since actors who star in Doctor Who as of late typically remain with the series for around three seasons. I feel like the series would immediately be shooting itself in the foot, having to replace a well-liked star like Ncuti Gatwa and considering he just gained a new love interest -- with Jonathan Groff's franchise debut -- his death feels unlikely. That said, it's not uncommon at all for character to die in the series, so the big question is who we might see bite the dust if that's what's being teased.

I'm hoping Ruby's adopted mother and grandmother are safe but, given Doctor Who loves to kill off characters that are near and dear to the hearts of companions, I could see either being targeted. I also don't know any other deaths that would be as impactful to viewers unless Ruby herself dies. I would hate to see that as well but, given it's been confirmed that Millie Gibson will return next season, I don't see that happening either.

Doctor Who's "The Legend Of Ruby Sunday" premieres on Disney+ on Friday, June 15th at 7:00 p.m. ET as part of the 2024 TV schedule. I know that I'll be watching live for all the big reveals and to finally find out what's going on with all these mysteries that are piling up.

Glen Powell stars as psychology and philosophy professor Gary Johnson, who poses as a hitman for the New Orleans Police Department and falls in love with a potential client named Maddy, played by Adria Arjona. Hit Man is loosely based on a real life-story, and as it turns out, Powell’s memorable catchphrase originated from those events rather than being made up.

When Powell’s Gary is undercover during the movie, he verifies his clients’ identities when they meet at restaurants by having them ask him, “How’s the pie?”, to which he answers, “All pie is good pie.” Richard Linklater said that he heard real Gary Johnson, who passed away in 2022, say this same line while in surveillance tapes that the filmmaker watched for research. As he told GamesRadar+:

The line in the movie - ‘all pie is good pie’ - people ask me who made that up but it’s a Gary Johnson line. You can hear the people go like 'oh, we are going to meet at this little diner, how will you know it’s me, I’ll be eating pie in the corner, come ask me how’s the pie, I’ll say you know…' They think they are in a crime movie, that everybody is playing a role, that it’s a secret code, that they are dealing with the real deal here.

To flip around a classic phrase, this is an example of art imitating life. Normally that’s pretty boring, but considering that the majority of the story beyond the basic details of the real Gary Johnson’s work was ideated by Linklater and Powell when they were writing the Hit Man script, it’s welcome to hear that they threw this actual catchphrase in that their source of inspiration used. However, just because the line was used doesn’t mean that Linklater agrees with the sentiment. When asked if all pie is indeed good pie, he answered:

No! There's a lot of crappy pie in the world!

I can only hope that Glen Powell actually did enjoy the pie he ate both while shooting the movie and filming that Pi Day promotional video for Hit Man. Powell and Adria Arjona are joined in the cast by Austin Amelio, Retta, Sanjay Rao, Molly Bernard and Evan Holtzman. Ahead of its Netflix release, the movie had a limited theatrical run, and our own Riley Utley argued that it’s a strong case for the streamer keeping its movies in theaters longer. As mentioned earlier, Hit Man has been met with critical acclaim, boasting a 97% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and a 93% Audience Score. It currently ranks as Netflix’s 7th highest-rated movie on the Tomatometer, ranking above Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and below Godzilla Minus One.

If you haven’t already, judge Hit Man for yourself by streaming it on Netflix. After you’ve done that, consult the 2024 movies schedule to figure out what new release you want to watch next.

Amid that pool of talent are the actors who made up Rory’s lineup of dreamy boyfriends, which fans have long been divided over. However, forget Team Jess, Team Dean, and even Team Logan because, apparently, Ryan Gosling nearly had a role on the fan-favorite series.

Before the rise of Ryan Gosling's romance films and other great movies, the Canadian actor had numerous memorable TV roles following his turn on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club in the ‘90s. After starring on Breaker High and Young Hercules and appearing in other shows such as Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Goosebumps and Flash Forward, the future Oscar nominee auditioned for Gilmore Girls. While appearing at a convention devoted to the WB/CW show in Connecticut, casting director Jami Rudofsky was asked if there were ever any actors that were the “one that got away.”

Via Vulture, she recalled how she had previously cast a “handsome young star” in an independent film. Before his audition, she said she “rolled [her] eyes because he was late, and he was blond.” Upon seeing his work, though, her perception changed, as he was “amazing” and auditioning while “in character.” She later brought in the young actor to read for a small role as a football character. But, ultimately, the audition did not go so well, and everyone thought she was crazy for thinking he was good. “Everyone was like, ‘Really, Jamie?’,” Rudofsky shared. And that young actor was the eventual star of The Place Beyond the Pines.

More on Gilmore Girls

Milo Ventimiglia Explains The Fun Connection His Wife's Name Has To Gilmore Girls, And I Love This For Them

Since it was just a small part, it’s likely that he wouldn’t have even been on the show very long or had a big impact on continuing storylines. However, plenty of characters ultimately had bigger roles than initially intended, so it’s entirely possible that the eventual lead of The Fall Guy's cast could have been yet another boy that Rory might fall for and have to make a decision on. Of course, whether the La La Land star's character would've gotten involved with Rory Gilmore would've likely depended on his chemistry with series star Alexis Bledel.

If Ryan Gosling had been cast in Gilmore Girls and his character ended up being yet another love interest for Rory, there are a number of narrative possibilities. Above anything though, I could surely imagine Rory having to choose between Gosling's guy and the characters played by Jared Padalecki, Milo Ventimiglia and Matt Czuchry. Honestly, Gosling not getting the part might have been for the better, as it's tough enough having to pick between two guys, let alone three. Having someone else come into the picture would definitely be too much -- even if Gosling is easy on the eyes.

It would have been great to see the beloved star join the series, and it's fun to imagine how much would have changed for a show that lost its way towards the end.Yet everything happens for a reason. And, on the other side of this equation, who knows just how much this gig might've detracted from the Nice Guys star's own career trajectory. If you ask me, everything turned out well for him in the end.

You can binge all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls along with A Year in the Life with a Netflix subscription now!

The new project — Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent — also shows an evolution in the actor’s career, as the legal thriller will serve as his Gyllenhaal’s first major TV role. Critics have had the opportunity to screen the first seven episodes of the eight-part miniseries, which premieres on June 12, and the verdict on the new David E. Kelley project is overwhelmingly positive.

Presumed Innocent is a remake of the 1990 movie starring Harrison Ford, but it’s also an adaptation of the novel of the same name. Jake Gyllenhaal will play Chicago prosecutor Rusty Sabich, who becomes the primary suspect in the murder of one of his colleagues. He must go to extreme lengths to prove he didn’t do it. Aramide Tinubu of Variety credits Gyllenhaal’s performance in making Presumed Innocent “one of the best legal thrillers to arrive on television in years.” Tinubu continues:

Presumed Innocent soars because the audience is never quite sure what to make of Rusty. He is highly affable one moment and borderline narcissistic the next, leaving both his sincerity and his innocence perpetually up for debate. Moreover, several brilliant twists keep the viewer from getting too comfortable. From the start, Gyllenhaal portrays Rusty as an enigma —whether he is experiencing guilt, shame or both is to be determined.

Emma Kiely of Collider agrees the performances are stellar, and she points out that knowing how the movie ended does not ruin the experience of watching the series. (Critics did not see the final episode of Presumed Innocent and do not know how or if the ending differs in this miniseries.) Kiely calls it “one of the standout television shows of the year,” rating the series a 9 out of 10:

Apple TV+'s Presumed Innocent takes the basics of the book and movie, updates them, and expands on all the themes and ideas that couldn’t make it into a film’s runtime. On the surface, this is a show about a grisly murder, a sexy affair, and some legal proceedings to boot. Look further, and you will see one of the most refreshing takedowns of male ego on recent television. The shadow of Succession is strong in today’s small-screen climate, but trust showrunner David E. Kelley to be the ideal person to spearhead a show that looks at the reprehensibility of men.

Akos Peterbencze of Looper gives it a 7.5 out of 10, also crediting the actors — the supporting cast is just as impressive as Jake Gyllenhaal, if not more, the critic says — as well as the gripping, suspenseful atmosphere and some wild cliffhangers to keep audiences intrigued. It can therefore be forgiven for a somewhat slow first episode and a few clichés. Peterbencze writes:

As the eight episodes unfold — from which seven were provided for review — the nearly four-decade-old source material proves just as effective as it was back in the late '80s. With its moderate pace, the pilot solely serves as the calm before the storm, but once we're brought up to speed with the case's details, the characters' relationships, and the power dynamics inside the office, Presumed Innocent unravels as a scandalous thriller and a pulpy domestic drama with unstoppable force.

Dave Nemetz of TVLine grades the Apple TV+ series an A-, saying that a courtroom thriller from David E. Kelley is already must-watch material, before you even throw in its impressive cast. Presumed Innocent is sleek and riveting, Nemetz says:

Kelley is the secret ingredient that makes this work, though. He shows here why he’s a virtuoso of the genre, crafting killer cliffhangers and delivering big courtroom fireworks. The show artfully zeroes in on little moments and gestures, too. … There is a late plot twist that strains plausibility, but Presumed Innocent knows its job and does it well, keeping us guessing about Rusty’s innocence to the very end. It’s honestly a credit to the series that I’ve seen all but the final episode, and I still don’t know whether Rusty did it or not. It’s the TV equivalent of an addictive page-turner… and it leaves us dying to get to the last page.

Lauren Milici of GamesRadar agrees with the above assessments as far as the performances given, though the critic thinks some parts are a bit underdeveloped, particularly when it comes to the character of Carolyn (Renate Reinsve). Milici rates the series 3 out of 5 stars, writing:

While Presumed Innocent ultimately fails to make a case for why a modern-day adaptation was necessary in the first place, it's still worth a watch if only for the absolutely out-of-this-world ensemble cast. If anything, it's a show about how one big bad decision snowballs into the worst possible scenario, and how everyone decides to cope (or not). Come for Jake, stay for Ruth Negga and Peter Sarsgaard, and pick up a copy of the novel afterward.

If you’re a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, David E. Kelley or just twisty legal dramas in general, Presumed Innocent sounds like a series you might want to fire up the Apple TV+ subscription for. The first two episodes will be available to stream on June 12, with one episode dropping each Wednesday thereafter. Fans of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out mystery series were given reason to celebrate when they recently learned the title of the upcoming third adventure structured around Daniel Craig’s sleuth, Benoit Blanc. The general consensus on these movies is, “Hey Rian Johnson, please make 1,000 of these murder mysteries with Daniel Craig.” The first one, Knives Out, was delicious. And if you feared at all that Craig and Johnson would rest on their laurels for the upcoming Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, well, one need only look at this smashing photo of a long-haired Blanc to know that this movie is going to be magnificent. I literally screamed out loud when I saw this photo.

What a distinguished gentleman Benoit Blanc looks like in this stunning black-and-white photo, delivered by Rian Johnson on day one of filming on the sequel, titled Wake Up Dead Man. And for me, it’s the long hair that moves the needle. I adore when a main character shifts up gears and changes visual appearances. It suggests a passage of time, and a drastic shift in perspective for the main character.

The hair that Daniel Craig is rocking in this photo can only be described as “Chris Pine in Poolman.” And I’m here for that… despite the fact that Poolman is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.

At this point, however, we know next to nothing about the case that Benoit Blanc will tackle in Wake Up Dead Man. We’ve been collecting news on the casting of Knives Out 3, which includes Civil War standout Cailee Spaeny, Josh Brolin, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Mila Kunis, and Jeremy Renner… who might have to play himself thanks to an inside joke worked into Glass Onion.

I’d also imagine that Wake Up Dead Man is going to take Benoit Blanc to a brand new location to match that delicious hairstyle that is showcased in the Rian Johnson image. Similar to the Hercules Poirot movies on which Kenneth Branagh has been tinkering, these stories should aspire to deliver wild new twists and turns for Benoit Blanc, bringing audiences to extreme new locales that might match the personalities of the possible killers. In this, I trust in Johnson and Craig. I just know that they will deliver.

Given the timing, I assume we will see Wake Up Dead Man at the end of 2025, possibly in time for an awards push (Glass Onion, in case you forgot, was nominated for an Academy Award for its screenplay). And hopefully Rian Johnson continues to share a bit from the third Knives Out as it films, but not too much. We want to end up in the theater with more than enough of Wake Up Dead Man still under wraps, so Benoit can pull back the curtains on his latest mystery.

While that may not be technically true, there are more people with a Netflix subscription than any of the other best streaming services, so if you’re going to sit down and watch anything, there’s a decent chance you’re going to check Netflix first. Of course, there’s so much on Netflix, that deciding what to watch can be difficult in itself.

This week Netflix has one item that will be a guaranteed hit as new episodes of one of the best Netflix series arrive. But if romantic period dramas, aren’t for you, there’s plenty more interesting content in the form of comedies, documentaries, and animated series. Here are some of the highlights of what’s new on Netflix this week.

Keith Robinson: Different Strokes - June 11

Netflix has become a major player in the stand-up comedy scene and the latest stand-up special coming to Netflix comes from comedian Keith Robinson. In the special, Robinson will discuss the two actual strokes he's had, and the disabilities he's had to deal with as a result.

Tour De France: Unchained (Season 2) - June 11

There are few sporting events quite like the Tour De France. The bicycle race requires an incredible level of endurance and skill but it is also an event that has been plagued with scandal and accusations of doping. This makes the behind-the-scenes story of the race potentially as compelling as the race itself.

David Letterman has kept himself quite busy since leaving late-night TV. His Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction has given us some of the most compelling interviews in recent memory. The new season of the show launches June 12 with two new episodes. Letterman sits down with former Hannah Montana Miley Cyrus as well Charles Barkley, who will likely have plenty to say about his career in the NBA as well as his future now that it looks like his job on Inside the NBA is coming to an end.

King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch (Season 2) - June 12

A lot of people collect things for one reason or another. There’s something to be said for the “stuff” that helps us remember our own past or to help us feel connected to past events of significance. King of Collectables follows Ken Goldin, owner of an auction house that goes in search of the most valuable and compelling items. Going after sports memorabilia is one thing, but some of the items being chased down this season get into the bizarre. If the show is back for Season 2 there was clearly enough interest in the first season that people want to see more of these historic items.

The Terracotta Warriors are one of the most famous archeological discoveries in history, but the find is only a half-century old and most of us probably don't know as much as we think about them. A new Netflix documentary takes a look back at how the original 8,000 warriors were found through archival footage and then follows a new group of archeologists who are continuing to dig and make new discoveries about what else may be buried there.

Bridgerton has been on Netflix’s most successful series in years. The first half of Season 3 of the romance series landed last month, and fans devoured it in short order, to the surprise of no one at all. Luckily the streamer is making fans wait too much longer for the conclusion. The remaining four episodes of the season arrive this week, so fans can see how the story concludes. Bridgerton Season 4 is expected, but this will need to be enough to keep fans satisfied for a while.

Gene Wilder was one of the great actors of his, or any, generation. While known for his ability to do comedy, he was equally skilled with drama when given the chance. The star of Young Frankenstein and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory passed away in 2016 but his work lives on. The documentary film Remembering Gene Wilder arrives on the streamer this week which includes footage from Wilder’s body of work blended with remembrances from those who knew him and those who loved his films.

Ultraman has been a popular Japanese superhero since the 1960s. Over the decades Ultraman has been reimagined numerous times, but at its core, it’s the story of a Japanese man with the ability to transform into a massive space-age hero in order to battle equally massive monsters. The new animated film Ultraman: Rising will introduce the hero to a new generation as a new Ultraman is forced to learn how to be a hero and how to be a dad. While this isn't even the first Ultraman project released by Netflix, this story isn't connected to any of the previous iterations of the character.

A tale of true crime or a tale of true love? Tell Them You Love Me takes a look at the story of Anna Stubblefield, a University professor who gets intimately involved with a non-verbal man with cerebral palsy, leading to questions of disability and consent. While she maintains she did nothing wrong, others are not so sure. Stubblefield was originally convicted in a criminal court, but the conviction was later overturned. In this new documentary from Sky, both cases are made, but it seems likely the topic is still too fraught to come to any clear agreement.

Of course, these are just the highlights of what's on Netflix this week. <dc:content>
There’s no denying that when Kim Kardashian’s sex tape with then-boyfriend Ray J came out in 2007, the world of pop culture was forever altered. It wasn’t just Kim who found fame, but the entire Kardashian-Jenner family, as they launched their reality show and took the first steps to what would become an empire worth billions of dollars. Nobody is more aware of just how big that tape’s impact was — and continues to be nearly two decades later — than Ray J himself, and he made some pretty bold claims about how things would be different if that leak never happened.

Ray J sat down with Shannon Sharpe on his podcast Club Shay Shay, where the Love & Hip Hop alum got philosophical about the butterfly effect his sex tape with Kim Kardashian had on the world. Ray J said:

How different would we all be? How different would this whole fucking thing be? How different would the industry be? How different would the wheel roll? Everything would be different. We would all be different. All of us. Everybody in here would be different. We would have on different clothes.

With Kim Kardashian finding fame, and her siblings also establishing brands within the fashion, makeup and lifestyle industries, is it possible that everything down to our clothes would be different if Kardashian never rose to anything more than Paris Hilton’s closet organizer? Ray J didn’t stop there, either, saying:

Probably more people would be going to college, and, you know what I’m saying, getting an education to be successful. There might not be any OnlyFans and all the things like that, all the opportunities like that. So are we a part of the cure or are we part of the disease? I don’t fucking know, all I know is I’m just trying to make it right.

Kim Kardashian was not the first celebrity to have a sex tape, but the heights she’s been able to reach by capitalizing on the fame from it are unrivaled. Still, it’s actually hilarious to think about it in those terms. Are young men and women choosing to pursue influencing careers or start OnlyFans accounts in lieu of a college education because they’re inspired by Kim Kardashian: Superstar? I guess I’ve heard crazier ideas.

Ray J previously said he and Kim Kardashian both received an initial payment of $400,000 plus 12.5 percent of the profits (which were reported at $1.4 million in the first six weeks), and they continue to see money from it all these years later. Pornhub reported in 2017 that the former couple earns a percentage of the sex tape’s earnings, with one site alleging that Ray J earns around $360K per year and Kardashian getting at least that much, if not more.

The sex tape was so successful in boosting Kim Kardashian’s career that rumors have circulated for years (perpetuated by Ray J, no less) that she and momager Kris Jenner were behind the leak to begin with — a claim that Jenner took a lie detector test to dispel.

It’s impossible to know how far-reaching the effects of Kim Kardashian’s sex tape are and how different our wardrobes and careers might be in that alternate reality. Thankfully in our current reality, we get to continue to see Kim’s whole clan on the 2024 TV schedule, with new episodes of The Kardashians every Thursday with a Hulu subscription.

As we await the second part of Bridgerton Season 3 to premiere on the 2024 TV schedule, Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton had the chance to premiere the new episodes early in Dublin. During a fan Q&A that took place during the event, the actress behind Penelope Featherington had an all-time great reply to being told she is “brave” for being nude in the episodes that will be released on June 13.

Nicola Coughlan’s Perfect Response To Being Called ‘Brave’ For Nude Bridgerton Scenes

As a fan captured on TikTok, while Nicola Coughlan was up on stage with Luke Newton with the microphone in her hand, she shared her thoughts on the “brave” fan comment, which certainly doesn’t mark the first time she’s received that specific phrase in reference to the sexually explicit Netflix project. In her words:

You know it is hard because I think women with my body type — women with perfect breasts, we don't get to see ourselves on screen enough and I'm very proud as a member of the perfect breast community. I hope you enjoy seeing them.

She did that!! Nicola Coughlan lovingly fired back with the most body-positive answer, calling herself a member of the “perfect breast community.”

As she aptly said, people with her body type don’t get highlighted enough in mainstream media, especially when it comes to a regency romance such as the Netflix hit. She capped off her answer by saying that she hopes people “enjoy” seeing her nude in the show as Penelope and Colin's love story unfolds.

What The Bridgerton Star Has Said About Her Upcoming Nude Scenes

Now, Nicola Coughlan’s nude scenes have yet to be released. While Penelope’s sex scenes were relegated to the mere appetizer of the carriage scene in part one, now that the character is going to be engaged to Colin Bridgerton, fans can brace themselves for a full course of spicy Bridgerton sequences between the couple. Coughlan previously revealed that she actually requested to be nude on the series. As she said prior:

There's one scene where I'm very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice. It just felt like the biggest 'fuck you' to all the conversation surrounding my body; it was amazingly empowering.

While Coughlan has previously opened up about not being comfortable in her skin right away while filming the scenes, she and Luke Newton ended up warming up so much to it that they hung out naked together on set between takes. As Coughlan prepares for the nude scenes to stream all over the world, she has said she “felt beautiful” filming them, and she is ready to look back on the experience and remember “how fucking hot” she looked. That being said, she totally requested a PG version of the season to watch with her mom.

The last four episodes of Bridgerton Season 3 drops on Thursday, June 13. You can catch up on the season thus far with a Netflix subscription before we see what happens when Penelope and Colin’s relationship blooms for real and is threatened by her big secret!

Thank goodness, we are getting a Road House 2! Now, the guy behind Dalton has opened up about how excited he is for it too. And let me take this moment to simply say: Bro, same.

While Road House premiered on the 2024 movie schedule a few months ago, there’s already a hunger for a sequel. The second movie was announced not long after the release of this Jake Gyllenhaal-led flick, and now, the leading man has opened up about how excited he is for it, telling TV Line:

All I know is that I'm very excited about it.

Dude, I'm with you. That’s also essentially all I know about a Road House sequel too. Based on Road House’s ending, we know Dalton is headed away from the bar and toward his next adventure. Sadly, it also seems like Conor McGregor might not return for a sequel, however, that’s not been confirmed. With all that said, like Gyllenhaal, I’m mostly just thrilled that this movie is happening, and I can’t wait to learn more about his reluctant vigilante.

The Zodiac actor is in the same boat too. He told the publication that he’s looking forward to throwing some punches as Dalton again, saying:

We've had a number of different ideas that we wanted to explore. And the fact that we're going to be able to do that is really exciting.

What Jake Gyllenhaal Is Doing Right Now

To see Jake Gyllenhaal's latest project, you can stream Presumed Innocent with an Apple TV+ subscription starting June 12.

In the first movie, we learned a bit about Dalton’s past as a fighter and what led him to leave the profession. Also, his time at the Road House only felt like the beginning of his career as seriously effective bar security.

When Road House 2 comes around, there are two roads I could see it going down. One might see Dalton with a new cast of characters in a new bar taking down a new bad guy. The other would see Gyllenhaal’s character returning to Florida and the Road House to help rebuild the bar that was thoroughly destroyed by the end of the first movie and save the Keys from the evil people trying to turn it into hotels.

Either way this goes, I know I want to see a reference or two to the OG Road House as well (like the callback Lukas Gage wanted in the 2024 movie).

I’m sure we’ll learn more about this exciting sequel soon, but while we wait I’ll be running off my own excitement and comments like this one from Gyllenhaal:

[It] will be expansive, and it will be bigger, and I can’t wait.

There were so many moments in Road House that I loved, and by the end, I could tell that there was more story to tell. I can’t wait to see Jake Gyllenhaal back as Dalton, and his enthusiasm about reprising to the part makes all of this even better!

As we learn more about Road House 2, we’ll keep you posted. While we wait, make sure to re-watch the first Road House starring Gyllenhaal and co. with an Amazon Prime subscription.

It was confirmed in a press release that said hikes would be in play effective immediately. That aside, the streamer – like others – has had a tendency to cancel shows after only a season or two. Now, shortly after the company instituted the increase in subscription costs, has confirmed that another one of its original series is joining the list of shows canceled or ending in 2024.

Which Max Show Has Come To An End?

Tokyo Vice is the streaming series that’s come to an end, according to Deadline. The trade reports that the confirmation was made amid the Produced By Panel held at Fox Studios. The series, which premiered on the platform back in the spring of 2022, finished up its second season back in April. Among those in attendance at the aforementioned event to share the news were series creator J.T. Rogers, director/producer Alan Poul and Sarah Aubrey, who’s the streamer’s Head of Original Content. An official statement was also shared by Max:

From Tokyo Vice’s richly written material to the gorgeously composed shots to the lived-in performances, the care and creativity of this enormously talented cast and crew shines in every frame of the show. We thank J.T., Alan, Ansel, Ken, Fifth Season, and Wowow for their partnership on this wholly unique modern noir thriller.

A crime drama that’s set in 1999, the series is centered on a journalist (Ansel Elgort) from Missouri, who moves from Japan after landing a job with a major newspaper there. The young man is eventually thrust into the world of the yakuza – the Japanese crime syndicates – and is guided through the murkiness of their dealings by a veteran detective (Ken Watanabe). The cast also includes Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Tomohisa Yamashita, Sho Kasamatsu, Yōsuke Kubozuka and Miki Maya. J.T. Rogers and Alan Poul shared their own joint statement, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to have produced the show:

Over the last five years Max has made sure we got to tell our story. They have supported us through thick and thin. Not only did they give us these two seasons, they said yes when we asked to end season one with a series of cliffhangers, and they said yes when we asked for two extra episodes so we could land the plane in the way J.T. had always envisioned. We’re grateful not only to Max, but to our partners Fifth Season, who sold the show around the world, and made it a global success story. They were in the trenches with us always, guaranteeing that we could make the show we wanted to make. The response from both the press and from fans, in particular to Season 2, has been overwhelming. It’s been thrilling to find out how deeply viewers have engaged with our characters, and to hear how they are clamoring for more.

The duo also noted that “there is more story to tell,” though they’ll have to “see what the future holds.” Fans of this noir piece may be in their feelings right now due to the cancellation, but that small tidbit may serve as a hint of hope that the series could return down the road.

It was announced this past week that the prices of two of Max’s key subscription tiers would be upped. The Ad-free plan, which was offered for $15.99 monthly, is now $16.99 per month. The yearly version of said plan has been upped to $169.99, which marks a $20 increase. The Ultimate Ad-free tier is also no longer $19.99 but $20.99 per month, and those looking to pay for that plan yearly, will have to pay $209.99, which is $10 more than the original price. All the while, the ad-supported plan is still available for $9.99 per month and $99.99 per year.

Ahead of the price changes, the streaming service had dropped the ax on a number of TV shows. This past January, the Issa Rae-produced Rap Sh!t was canceled after two seasons, and the Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby-led comedy Our Flag Means Death met its demise as well. The end of May saw political dramedy The Girls on the Bus canned after a season and, during that same month, the adult animated series Scavengers Reign also received the boot. Though the rights to that latter show were secured by Netflix, and fans have since been hyping up the production, which has a 100% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s honestly rough whenever one has to contend with either cancellations or price increases. At the very least, when it comes to Tokyo Vice, it sounds like the creative team is giving up hope on bringing the show back somehow. We’ll have to wait and see if that comes to pass – and what other shows might follow it on the chopping block.

As of this writing, you can still stream both seasons of Tokyo Vice using a Max subscription.
